New Study: Weight Loss Improves Mental Health

Dietitian and Manager of Wesley Weight Management Clinic's Clayfield Clinic, Bianca Neaves recently presented a study demonstrating a link between participation in the Clinic's weight loss program and improvements in depression, anxiety and stress. Speaking at a national conference on the Gold Coast Ms Neaves said,

"It goes without saying that when someone loses weight they are going to feel better. But in our client group we saw improved mood regardless of how much weight a person lost, or their commencement weight."

These improvements could result from the Clinic's model of one-on-one appointments which facilitate the discussion of stressors that are unique to each client. They could also result from the involvement of Weight Management Psychologists who encourage people to change their thinking and develop skills such as assertiveness, time management and positive thinking. Ms Neaves says,

"We routinely assess our clients' depression, anxiety and stress levels to alert us to any underlying issues behind their weight gain.

"When people understand the factors that influence their eating and exercise behaviours they can make positive change."

Ms Neaves said that education and behaviour change are fundamental components of the Wesley Weight Management Clinic's weight loss program,

"We believe that our clients enjoy spectacular success because they learn how to lose weight for life and make positive behaviour change. Our weight loss results show that our heaviest group of clients loses an average of 7.9 kilos in one month, 15 kilos in three months and 21 kilos in six months.

"More importantly we see our clients grow in confidence and self esteem throughout their weight loss program: and that's rewarding."
