Weight Management Psychologist Glenn Mackintosh
Q: What does a Weight Management Psychologist do?
A: There's a growing research base on the Psychology of eating, exercise, and weight management. Our job is to help Wesley Weight Management Clinic clients apply this research to their lives to achieve lasting weight loss.
Q: So it's not as scary as it sounds?
A: Not at all - you won't find yourself on a couch talking about your Mother in my sessions! I firmly believe that Positive Psychology can be useful for every person at some stage in their life.
Q: Why is Psychology an important part of the weight management process?
A: There are so many psychological factors that can help or hinder a long term weight management effort: mood, core beliefs, motivation, self esteem and body image and readiness for change; as well as thinking patterns and emotional relationship with food. Working on these factors can help people improve their mental health, lose weight and maintain their healthy weight for life.
Q: What do you like most about your job? Any challenges?
A: As a Positive Psychologist I'll answer what I like first! I enjoy surprising clients with how useful and practical Psychology can be in helping them achieve their weight loss goals and maintain a healthy weight for life. As for challenges, it takes some people longer to achieve their goals. I admire people who persevere and eventually reap the rewards!
