Dietitian and Brisbane CBD Clinic Manager Annalie Houston
Q: What are some of the unique challenges that busy professionals face when trying to achieve a healthy weight?
A: Time pressures are a common problem for busy professionals: many of the clients at our Brisbane CBD Clinic comment that they have trouble scheduling regular exercise into busy, unpredictable schedules. Plus they comment that they don't have the energy to plan healthy meals.
Q: How do you help busy professionals overcome these challenges?
A: Once they start eating well and exercising, busy professionals find that they have more energy: for exercise and healthy eating; and for their job and their family and friends.
Q: When people work long hours, how can they ensure that they maintain a healthy lifestyle?
A: It's all in the planning. If people keep healthy snacks at work they are less likely to rely on the biscuit tin for an energy boost. If my clients don't have time to pre-prepare meals, I can recommend some great salad bars around Brisbane City, which means that they can purchase a fresh, nutritious lunch in a flash.
I also recommend lunchtime walks in the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens. A lunchtime walk is refreshing, increasing productivity in the afternoon which can mean leaving work earlier! If people prefer to walk after work I encourage them to walk with a buddy. The Garden is buzzing with people exercising after work so I encourage them to join in!
Q: How can business people stay healthy when they are travelling or eating out?
A: I encourage my clients to take control over the food choices they are presented with. This can mean requesting healthy options at restaurants, asking their travel agent to book them into a hotel with healthy dining options or keeping low fat snacks at work.
Q: What are some healthy ways to 'unwind' from a busy day at work?
A: It's common for busy professionals to unwind with a drink. I encourage my clients to chose other activities that they enjoy such as getting a massage or calling a friend. Plus I help them manage their stress by teaching them practical stress management techniques.
