Chris Loses 64kgs and Discovers a New Life
Brisbane printer Chris Sheppard didn't realise how good he could feel until he lost 64kgs.
The 25 year old had lived on a daily diet of fast food with no exercise until his older brother, Tim, intervened and took him to the Wesley Weight Management Clinic.
Chris weighed 151 kilos when he first met the team of Doctors, Dietitians, Psychologists and Exercise Physiologists at Wesley Weight Management's Clayfield Clinic.
The health professionals at the Clinic tailored a weight loss program unique to Chris' needs and 12 months later he weighs 90 kilos, having lost the equivalent weight of a size 12 woman.
"I was about 20 years old and 130 kilos when I first realised I had an issue with my weight," Chris said.
"I felt tired all the time and I couldn't do anything. My asthma had become really bad and everywhere I went I had to take my puffer. Even walking up the slightest hill I would find it hard to breathe.
"I wasn't motivated to go anywhere and I was a bit shy."
Chris tried a number of different weight loss programs, even buying an expensive course of diet pills that had been advertised on television. A stint at his local gym had yielded promising results but ended when his Grandmother fell ill, requiring his full time care outside of work. Too busy to take care of himself, Chris said he didn't think about the quality of his diet, relying on fast food outlets for his daily meals. It was not until his brother, Tim, stepped in that things changed.
"I started to worry about how my weight would affect my health later on. I was worried I could become Diabetic or I could have a heart attack or a stroke."
For someone who had never assessed the impact his lifestyle had on his health, the lessons Chris learned at the Wesley Weight Management Clinic were life changing.
"At the Clinic they told me what I needed to do to lose weight. They told me all about what foods to eat and what foods had fat in them. I hadn't realised how much fast food I was eating and just how much fat fast food really contains."
Diet wasn't the only thing in his life that changed; Chris had to commit to a regular exercise program.
"I walked all the streets around my neighbourhood and tackled the hills.
"I enjoy walking now, but I still hate the hills!"
Having smashed his original goal weight of 100 kilos, Chris says he has a new appreciation for life and is full of energy.
"My confidence has increased and I now have quite a good social life. I'm proud of what I've achieved. Everyone notices how different I look and it feels excellent."
