It's Never Too Late to Lose Weight82 year old Margaret Scott proves that it's never too late to lose weight

82 year old Margaret Scott is living proof that it's never too late to lose weight. Margaret lost 18 kilos in six months with the help of the Wesley Weight Management Clinic in Brisbane and says she feels fantastic.

Twice a week you will find Margaret at the Chandler Aquatic Centre, walking 20 laps with her daughter.

Margaret said that she had always been "a big girl", but put on a lot of weight after knee replacements on both legs seven years ago stopped her from exercising.

"I was in a lot of pain, and walking to exercise just wasn't an option, so I steadily put weight on," she said.

Margaret said her eating habits contributed to the problem,

Margaret enjoys exercising in the swimming pool"I've always eaten big meals and I was brought up to always eat everything on my plate."

Margaret said she was encouraged to lose weight by her late husband's Cardiologist Dr Geoff Holt, the Medical Director of Wesley Weight Management Clinic.

"When my late husband and I visited Dr Holt at The Wesley Hospital he would always tell me I needed to lose "that 25kg bag of cement I was carrying around", she laughs.

Margaret said she made the decision to join a weight loss program at Wesley Weight Management after her husband passed away.

"I'm 82 and want to stay healthy and independent for as long as I can."

Margaret said exercise was a big stumbling block at first to joining a weight loss program, but Dr Holt said she could exercise safely in a pool, and the weightlessness of the water would take the pressure off her knees.

Plus she was reassured by the fact that the Wesley Weight Management Clinic is medically supervised,

"Every week they would check my blood pressure and make sure that I was well."

She said her Dietitian taught her how to change her eating habits so that she could cut down on calories but still eat the foods she enjoyed.

"He taught me about portion sizes. I could still eat meat, which I love, but I only have a small amount of meat and load up the plate up with vegetables," she said.

"I'm not into sweet things but my weakness would have to be Merseydale Cheese, I just love it. I'm still allowed to eat it, but not every day.

"'My Dietitian taught me to live by the motto 'everything in moderation'!"

Margaret said she lost weight quickly and it wasn't long before she had to buy a new swimsuit.

"I started sewing up my old one to take it in, but that didn't work for long, so I was very proud the day I bought my brand new pink Speedos!"

"It was also wonderful being able to fit into my favourite clothes that I'd kept in the back of my wardrobe because I couldn't bear to throw them out. And yes, it's great to go out and buy new nice clothes."

"I'm very pleased with what I've achieved so far, but I couldn't have done it without the support of my 'clinic team', my family and my 'mahjong ladies'.
